There is something deeply satisfying about pulling a homemade salami and tomato pizza out of your own oven, the cheese still bubbling and the edges crisp and golden. This is the kind of pizza you make on a relaxed weekend afternoon, when you want real food without a lot of fuss. With a tender crust, a layer of tangy salsa or ketchup, melty cheese, and rounds of spicy salami crowned with fresh tomato, it tastes far better than anything you would order for delivery, and it costs a fraction of the price.

Pizza as we know it traces back to Naples, Italy, where flatbreads topped with tomatoes became a beloved street food in the 18th and 19th centuries. As Italian families carried the recipe around the world, every kitchen put its own spin on it. In Ukrainian home kitchens, pizza has become a cheerful staple for casual gatherings, often built on a soft, pillowy dough and loaded generously with whatever good cheese and cured sausage the cook has on hand. This salami version is one of those friendly, no-rules recipes that welcomes your own touches.

The secret to a great homemade pie is letting your dough rest until it is soft and easy to handle, so it stretches without snapping back. Roll it about a finger thick for a crust that is sturdy underneath but still light. Scattering half the cheese directly on the sauce before the toppings is a smart little trick: that bottom layer keeps the salami and tomato from sliding around and helps the crust stay juicy rather than soggy.

Tips & Substitutions

  • Sauce: Use a good tomato salsa for a brighter, slightly spicy base, or plain ketchup in a pinch. For a more classic flavor, swap in seasoned pizza or marinara sauce.
  • Cheese: Any good melting cheese works. Mozzarella gives you that stretchy pull, while a sharper hard cheese adds more flavor. A blend of both is wonderful.
  • Salami: Pepperoni, spicy soppressata, or smoked sausage all make great stand-ins. Slice it thin so the edges crisp up.
  • Tomato: Use firm, ripe tomatoes and pat the slices dry to avoid extra moisture. Cherry tomato halves are lovely too.
  • Make it lighter: Add sliced bell pepper, mushrooms, or fresh basil, and go easy on the cheese.

Once the edges are browned and the cheese is melted and bubbling, pull the pizza from the oven and let it rest for a minute so the toppings settle and the slices cut cleanly. Serve it hot, cut into generous wedges, with a simple green salad alongside. Leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to three days; reheat slices in a hot skillet or a 350°F oven to bring back the crisp crust rather than microwaving, which can turn the base rubbery. Enjoy every cheesy, savory bite.

Ingredients

  • 450 Grams
    pizza dough
  • 50 Grams
    tomato salsa (or ketchup)
  • 150 Grams
    hard cheese, grated
  • 100 Grams
    salami
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1 Piece
    tomato
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pizza dough ahead of time using any recipe you like, or your own tried-and-true favorite. Let it rise properly until it is soft and easy to work with.

  2. Roll the dough into an even round about a finger thick. Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or lightly greased with oil.

  3. Spread the base with tomato salsa or ketchup, distributing the sauce evenly over the surface and stopping just short of the edges.

  4. Sprinkle the pizza with half of the grated cheese. This bottom layer keeps the toppings from sliding off and helps make the crust juicy.

  5. Cut the salami into thin slices and arrange them over the dough.

  6. Finely chop the onion and scatter it over the pizza.

  7. Cut the tomato into small pieces or thin rounds and lay them on top. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  8. Sprinkle the rest of the cheese over everything so the toppings are covered with an appetizing golden crust.

  9. Place the baking sheet in an oven preheated to 200°C (400°F) and bake until done, about 25 to 30 minutes, until the edges are browned and the cheese is melted and bubbling.

  10. Take the finished pizza out of the oven, let it rest for a minute, cut it into slices, and serve hot. Enjoy!
