There’s something wonderfully cheerful about a bowl of fresh fruit salad, and this version brings together kiwi, apple, orange, and banana in a soft cloud of light cream. You can pull it together in about fifteen minutes, with no cooking required, which makes it a lifesaver on warm afternoons when you want something sweet but refreshing rather than heavy. The fruit stays bright and juicy, and the splash of cream rounds everything out into a dessert that feels just a little bit indulgent.

Simple fruit salads like this one are a beloved part of everyday Ukrainian home cooking, especially in summer when markets overflow with ripe produce. While the dish itself is humble and found in kitchens all over the world, the Eastern European touch here is the spoonful of cream tying the fruit together, a gentler alternative to the sugary syrups or yogurts you might see elsewhere. It’s the kind of thing a grandmother would whip up to keep little ones happy, and it has stayed popular precisely because it’s so easy and so honest.

The secret to a great fruit salad is in the prep. Be sure to rinse every piece of fruit well under cold running water and pat it dry, so excess moisture doesn’t water down your cream. Cut your banana, apple, and kiwi into even, medium cubes so each spoonful gets a little of everything, and separate the orange into segments before slicing them small to release their juice. Fold the cream in gently at the very end, right before serving, so the fruit keeps its shape and the salad looks as lovely as it tastes.

Tips & Substitutions

  • Cream swap: Use whipped cream, Greek yogurt, or even a drizzle of honey-sweetened sour cream if you prefer a tangier finish.
  • Stop the browning: Toss the banana and apple in a teaspoon of lemon or orange juice to keep them from turning brown.
  • Mix up the fruit: Strawberries, grapes, pear, or pineapple all work beautifully in place of any piece here.
  • Add crunch: Scatter in a handful of chopped walnuts, almonds, or a sprinkle of granola for texture.
  • Make it lighter: Skip the cream entirely and let the orange juice be your dressing for a naturally lean, fasting-friendly bowl.

Serve this fruit salad right away in pretty dessert cups, finished with a sprig of fresh lemon balm for a touch of color and aroma. If you need to make it ahead, prepare the fruit and keep it chilled, then fold in the cream just before serving so nothing goes soggy. Leftovers will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a day, though it’s at its very best fresh and cool from the bowl. Enjoy every sweet, juicy bite!
