The berry mojito is a summery variation on the Cuban cocktail, where a handful of fresh berries joins the usual trio of mint, lime, and rum. The classic mojito was born in Cuba, in Havana, and it’s the gentle muddling of mint and lime right in the glass that releases the essential oils and juice without mashing the leaves into a pulp.

The berries — strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, or blueberries — give the cocktail color and a fruity tang, while sparkling water and a cap of crushed ice make it truly refreshing in the heat.

Good to Know

  • Press the mint gently with a muddler, just to “wake up” the aroma; overdo it and the leaves will turn bitter.
  • Simple syrup dissolves better than sugar in a cold drink; if you don’t have any, make your own from equal parts sugar and water.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, replace the rum with an extra splash of sparkling water or soda mixed with berry juice.
  • Use crushed rather than cubed ice — it chills faster and holds the “cap” on the surface.

Serve immediately with a straw, before the ice melts; the berries at the bottom of the glass are also delicious eaten with a spoon at the end.
