Berry and Citrus Smoothie
A thick pink smoothie in which the tart bite of grapefruit and raspberry is balanced by the creamy sweetness of banana and a spoonful of honey. The drink is substantial thanks to the berry pulp, so it goes down more like a light snack than an ordinary juice.
Homemade fresh smoothies like this preserve not only flavor but also the fruit’s vitamins, unlike long-shelf-life store-bought juices. The citrus component supplies vitamins C and P plus potassium, the raspberries add anthocyanins, and the banana gives a velvety texture without any extra thickener.
Tips and Swaps
- Seedy raspberries can be pressed through a sieve after blending if you dislike tiny seeds on the tongue.
- Maple syrup or a few dates work in place of honey; adjust the sweetness to how ripe your banana is.
- Grapefruit shouldn’t be combined with medications—its juice affects how they are absorbed; substitute orange if needed.
- For a thinner consistency, add a little cold water, orange juice, or a cube or two of ice.
Drink the smoothie freshly made, within 20 to 30 minutes, since it darkens over time and loses some of its vitamins. Serve well chilled in a tall glass.
